Fourto is a hack of the game Quarto. Learn how to make your own pieces for either $2 with dollar store pieces, the cost of copies of the 2D pieces, or use the template to create your own.
Quarto is an outstanding game of deductive reasoning. It includes a 4 x 4 game board and 16 pieces. Each piece has four attributes: color, height, shape and consistency. So each piece is black or white, tall or short, square or round, and hollow or solid. The object is to place the fourth piece in a row where all four pieces have at least one attribute in common. Play Quarto online here.

You can hack Quarto and make “Fourto” with supplies from Dollar Tree that will cost you just $2 per set or get really creative and have students design pieces using reused bits and pieces from the recycle and trash bins!

The picture above shows an updated hack of this game. The pHun erasers used in the original are becoming harder to find at Dollar Tree. These are a back of six rainbow colored beveled erasers from Dollar Tree. We bought four packages of them and cut them in half to make the eight pieces we needed above. You can use the remaining erasers for two more game piece sets.
Our favorite way to make 2D pieces is to print the following document on two different colors of cardstock. Then cut along dotted line so you have two sets with 8 pieces of each color or three attributes (print this sheet on just a single color) to make the game easier for younger players at first .
Large 2D game pieces which can be printed either with all four attributes (two different colors) or three attributes (two copies on the same color). For a gameboard, you can make a grid on a piece of standard size foam board.
Large 2D game pieces with animals in each quadrant. Great for small children using the same gameboard made with foam board as suggested above.
The template and spreadsheet below will allow students to use anything they have on hand to create their own 16 unique game pieces. Some examples are also provided.
